About the organization:
National Remote Sensing Centre (NRSC) is one of the centres of Indian Space Research Organisation under the Department of Space, Govt. of India, engaged in operational remote sensing activities. The operational use of remote sensing data span wide spectrum of themes which include water resources, agriculture, soil and land degradation, mineral exploration, groundwater targeting, geomorphologic mapping, coastal and ocean resources monitoring, environment, ecology and forest mapping, land use and land cover mapping and urban area studies, large scale mapping, etc. The chief activities of NRSC are satellite data and aerial data reception, data processing, data dissemination, applications for providing value added services and training and distribution of date from foreign satellites RADARSAT, IKONOS, QUICKBIRD and ORBVIEW.
NRSC has its own ground station at Shadnagar, 60 Km south of Hyderabad to acquire remote sensing satellite data from the Indian Remote Sensing satellites, the latest being Cartosat-1 (IRS-P5), and other foreign satellites like LandSat, NOAA, ERS, TERRA and AQUA.. Two modern Aircraft (Beach Craft 200) having INS, K-GPS fitted with Multi-spectral Scanner, Photogrammetric Cameras, SAR, Electromagnetic Sensors are available for aerial remote sensing. NRSC has acquired the capability to design, develop, deploy and operationalize multi-sensor satellite based ground systems comprising of ground and application segments to meet domestic and international requirements. The acquired data are being processed in-house, churning out variety of data products for distribution among the user community. Apart from data supply, it has the capability to undertake projects in a variety of disciplines. NRSC has organized training activities to train professionals, scientists as well as decision makers on Remote Sensing and GIS. The NRSC Headquarters at Hyderabad has a Training Division, which organizes training courses as well as custom made courses.    NRSC is a one-stop center for all the users remote sensing data solutions. Five RRSCs are established across the Country at Bangalore, Jodhpur, Kharagpur, Dehradun and Nagpur under the agies of National Natural Resources Management System with DOS as the nodal agency to cater to the needs of different user agencies comprising of Governmental/Non-Governmental, academia and industry. RRSCs are equipped with the state of the art digital infra structure to provide Remote Sensing & GIS Centric products and services in their respective regions. RRSCs are also involved in software development, customization, and operational research and development in remote sensing and capacity building and training in Geospatial technology. Recently, RRSCs are amalgamated with NRSC with enhanced scope of serving the user community at national and regional level. RRSCs participate actively in areas like disaster management, software development, agro-climatic planning, national drinking water mission, national resources census, large scale mapping, etc, besides taking up projects for various ministries and departments.    The Ground Station Complex at Shadnagar, 55km south of Hyderabad city is the prime centre to receive data from various Remote Sensing Satellites both Indian and Foreign origin. The Ground Station has three Antenna Receive systems (Terminals) to support multi- mission operations. They are capable to Track and Receive data from any Remote Sensing Satellite, which is in sun-synchronous, polar near circular orbit operating in the frequency bands 2200-2300 MHz (S-Band) and 8000-8400 MHz (X band). This Ground Station is well equipped for simultaneous reception of data from three satellites through its three terminals. Currently the following Satellites are being tracked for Data Acquisition viz. IRS 1C, IRS1D; IRS-P4 (Oceansat-1) IRS P6 (Resourcesat-1); IRS P5 (Cartosat-1); TERRA; AQUA and E.R.S. . The Antenna is a dual shaped parabolic solid reflector of 7.5 m. dia meter with a shaped hyperbolic sub-reflector of 0.736-m. dia meter. The main reflector is made out of 16 Nos of radially stretch formed panels having 1.6mm thick aluminium sheeting and duly stiffened by aluminium ‘Z’ sections. The front end feed system is a composite multi element monopulse type in a cassegrain configuration capable for S and X band reception. The Tracking pedestal is an Elevation over Azimuth mount type steel structure. Each axis is driven by a pair of Brushless DC/AC servomotors coupled in an anti backlash mode through reduction gearboxes and slewring bearings. The electro mechanical brakes, tachometers, torque couplings, shaft encoders, limit switch assembly, manual crank drive and stow-lock arrangements are housed at appropriate locations in the pedestal housing.Servo Drive System: A closed loop higher order Servo control system of type I/II having high gain and narrow and wide band features with high acceleration and precision tracking accuracy. The system can be operated in different modes selectable from a PC in remote mode and also from a front panel of the servo Electronics unit in local mode. The system operates in Manual rate and in Auto Track in local mode and in a Programme Track mode from a PC in remote selection. Low maintenance, high speed, Brushless Servomotors with associated IGBT based servo controllers drives the antenna with precision control. Antenna position information is derived using optical encoders. Receive System: The front end feed sub-system receives the R.F. Signals transmitted by the satellite through the Antenna. These R.F signals after due amplification and division flows through Synthesized Down Converter units where in it under goes down conversion to Intermediate Frequencies at 720 MHz (for X-Band) and 70MHz (for S-band). The 720MHz IF data signal flows through two sets of Multi Function Data Demodulator & Bit synchronizer (Demod / BSSC) units. The Demod / BSSC units extracts data & clock after necessary Demodulation, Bit Synchronization and Signal Conditioning outputs them to the Data Archival & Quick Look Browse system (DAQLB) for further processing. Ground Station is maintaining its own Universal timing system to an accuracy of a few microseconds using Global Position System (GPS) and distributing to all DAQLB systems. The Timing System consists of precision Time Code Generators, Time Code Translators, Time Distribution unit, GPS Receivers. Routine testing Antenna Receive and data archival chain of each Terminal is conducted using stand Test set up. Qualitative and Quantitative validation of the complete chain will be evaluated. It has mainly Local Loop Testing and Boresight Radiation Testing. The test set up includes a Custom built Data Simulator and Boresight Antenna system with mission specific suit cease model. Shadnagar Ground Station is having dedicated communication links with Space Craft Control Centre (SCC), Bangalore and Data Processing Centre, Balanagar. Space Net communication using INSAT Satellite is providing voice and limited data transfer network. A dedicated 2 Mbps Fiber optic leased link between Ground Station and Balanagar is providing data transfer in a limited way. Ground Station is having Uninterrupted Power Supply (UPS) system providing quality power to all critical Equipments. The Station self-reliament in its captive power Generations having multiple D.G. sets with high redundancy supporting the daily operations.
