About the organization:
The University of North Bengal was established by Act of the Legislature of West Bengal in 1962 and assigned the mandate of providing teaching, training and research in various branches of advanced learning , and promoting the dissemination of knowledge to fulfill growing socio-economic and technical manpower needs in the six North Bengal districts and the neighbouring state of Sikkim . The campus occupies an area of about 330 acres 9 km outside Siliguri and Bagdogra Airport in the Terai region of Darjeeling district. The University Act was revised under West Bengal Act of XXV of 1981 and it came into force with effect from September 16 , 1981. The Akshaya Kumar Maitreya Heritage Museum incorporating Raja Rajaram Museum Collection was established in the University of North Bengal in February 1965. The Museum has now become a rich repository of collection in sculpture, coins, paintings, manuscripts etc. depicting the history and Heritage of North Bengal. It functions as a regional museum and is one of the few University Museums in India. The main objects of the Museum are to collect, preserve and study archaeological relics lying scattered in the six Districts of North Bengal and Sub-Himalayan Region.National Service Scheme has been introduced at the University of North Bengal since 1982. It was introduced as a complement to the academic programmes of the University. It has become a part and parcel of the academic system . The major objective ever since has been to involve the students in the society of which they are an integral part. The entire programme of the NSS revolves round the students wherein the NSS volunteers put the students in a single thread in order to implement the NSS objectives. NSS is a challenging medium for functioning amongst the downtrodden section of the society. All programmes of the NSS are controlled and coordinated from the office of the Programme Coordinator of NSS at the North Bengal University. The programmes undertaken and decided at the meeting of the  State Level Advisory Committee are implemented through the NSS Units at the affiliated colleges under the University and also at the University level. All programmes of NSS are coordinated by a Part-time Coordinator. Planning, implementation, monitoring, supervision, evaluation and providing necessary advice is done from the office of the Programme Coordinator at the university. The records of activities are maintained by the office of the Programme Coordinator and funds are disbursed and accounts are maintained by the Finance branch of the university. The college units are basic units which function under one Programme Officer on the basis of periodical instructions issued from the office of the Programme Coordinator. All new programmes to be undertaken by the units are intimated by the Regional Centre of NSS of Govt. of India and the State Liaison Officer,Govt. of West Bengal, which are transmitted for the units for compliance. Presently the enrolled strength of the NSS volunteers at the University of North Bengal is 10,300 (Ten thousand three hundred). The volunteers are spread throughout the colleges affiliated to this university. Both Regular Activities and Special Camping  per year undertaken by the NSS units. As per NSS manual, a volunteer has to render 120 hours of service to the society as a member of the NSS unit per year. The volunteers who take part in the special camping programme has to work for 7 consecutive days at the venue of the programme.
