About the organization:
The Indian Navy is a well balanced and cohesive three dimensional force, capable of operating above, on and under surface of the oceans efficiently safeguarding our national interests. The Chief of the Naval Staff (CNS) exercises operational and administrative control of the Indian Navy from Integrated Headquarters of MOD(Navy). He is assisted by the Vice Chief of the Naval Staff (VCNS) and three other Principal Staff Officers, namely the Deputy Chief of the Naval Staff (DCNS), the Chief of Personnel (COP) and the Chief of Material (COM). The Navy has the following three commands, each under the control of a Flag Officer Commanding-in-Chief:- The Western Naval Command (Headquarters at Mumbai). The Eastern Naval Command (Head quarters at Visakhapatnam) The Southern Naval Command (Headquarters at Kochi) The Western and the Eastern Naval Command are operational commands and exercise control over operations in the Arabian Sea and the Bay of Bengal respectively. The Southern Command is designed as the Training Command. The cutting edge of the Indian Navy is its two fleets, namely the Western Fleet based at Mumbai and the Eastern Fleet based at Visakhapatnam. Besides the fleets, there is a flotilla based at Mumbai, Visakhapatnam and Port Blair (A & N Islands) that provides Local Naval Defence in the respective region. Naval ships are also based at other ports along the east and the west coast of India and the island territories thus ensuring continued naval presence in the areas of national interest. Further there are various Naval Officer-in-Charge (NOIC), under each command, responsible for the Local naval Defence of ports under their respective jurisdictions. The defence of the Andaman & Nicobar islands is a joint responsibility of all the three services and is coordinated by the headquarters, Andaman & Nicobar Command, located at PortBlair. This is the only unified command in our defence forces and is headed by a Commander-in-chief, as appointment on rotation among three services. The Local Naval Defence of the Lakshadweep group of islands is the Naval Officer-in-Charge, Lakshadweep. The Flag Officer Naval Aviation (FONA) based at Goa is responsible for overseeing all matters pertaining to aviation while Flag Officer Submarines (FOSM), who is also the Assistant Chief of the Naval Staff (Submarines) based at Integrated Headquarters of MOD(Navy), New Delhi is responsible for overseeing all the submarine related issues. As compared to other profession in the civilian world, the Indian Navy has a great deal to offer to young men and women. It gives an individual the opportunity to display leadership skills and bestows one with a tremendous amount of responsibility at a very young age. The Navy provides countless opportunities ranging from being in charge of part of a ship to flying an aircraft or looking after one department on the ship/establishment independently. In addition, throughout his/her career one can actively participate in the sports and adventure activities of their choice, an option not commonly offered in other office jobs. Despite being seafarers the Indian Navy has sent expeditions to Mount Everest and Antarctica, an achievement which the nation can be proud. In this profession the friendship is made for a lifetime due to the strong bond of camaraderie that forms with fellow officers and also with the sailors, whom one may command. An officer at a very young age assumes the responsibility of commanding his men and use of latest equipment on the ships/submarines/aircraft. Working in the latest technology environment, the young officers are exposed to the very best in their field of operations. The cutting edge technology and Revolution in Military Affairs makes the career very challenging in the Indian Navy. It is the only service that operates regularly with the other navies of the world. This not only helps in professional expertise of an individual but provides opportunities to exhibit our talent with pride all across the world. Men in white command dignity and respect and are always in high spirits as the service offers personal, financial, emotional security and status in the society. Adventure activities like mountaineering, sailing, yachting, water sports, polo and other sports/games are easily accessible. For those who seek fulfilment in life, there is no career like the Navy. It offers an attractive pay package, perks, life time pension, medical benefits for self and family. A far cry from duty ashore. For one thing, while at sea, you will be putting all your skills and determination to the actual test. You will be given all the responsibility and will be doing an important job for which you have been uniquely trained. Of course, sea duty does not mean you will spend all your time at sea. Your ship will have its own ‘home-port’ and you will spend quite a bit of your time in or close to that port. At sea, you will be excited to visiting far flung places in India and abroad which you had only read or heard about. “Life at sea is full of challenges and immense satisfaction”. While you are at sea, the Navy looks after the welfare of your family like its own.” Whether on a ship or submarine, Sailors are provided with sufficient living spaces. Each Sailor is assigned a “berthing area,” which includes a locker for storage, as well as a “rack” for sleep. The cooks in the kitchen (galleys) constantly prepare food for hundreds of men. There are dining halls for the men to dine. Mess decks are not just areas to sleep, but are also for recreation – Sailors and Officers can kick back and watch television or play games. For repair and maintenance of ships and submarines, the IndianNavy has two major Naval dockyards located at Mumbai and Visakhapatnam. Besides these, smaller Naval Ship Repair Yards function at Kochi and Port Blair. Major aircraft repair and maintenance organisations exist at Kochi and Goa. Logistics support is provided by a well established, network of Weapon Equipment Depots(WEDs), Naval Armament Depots(NADs) and Naval Store Depots(NSDs) located at various places. All base support facilities are largely manned by civilian personnel. Base depot ship INS Kadamba, commissioned on 31 May 05 is located at Karwar. The commissioning of this base marks the culmination of the first phase of developing a state-of the art Naval Base for the Indian Navy. The base is capable of berthing, sustain and maintain a substantial part of our blue water maritime forces on the Western seaboard. Of all the diverse elements that go into making of an effective Navy, no single factor is as important as its Men and Women. It is for this reason that training in the service assumes a special significance. The Southern Naval Command headquarters at Kochi is the Navy?s training command. There are currently 33 training establishments spread over the length and breadth of the country.
